The last defibrillator training session, held at Hope Street, Liverpool.
30th January 2014

Well over 70 people attended this final training session, the culmination of the magnificent charitable effort by the Mark Degree, to save lives around the Province, by providing 21 defibrillators to 20 Masonic Halls.   Due to the size of the Hall, Hope Street received two of these wonderful little life-savers.

The attendance of members of staff from all the Halls has been a particularly welcome aspect, with this meeting again being attended by staff members, both from Hope Street and Garston, who will now feel able and comfortable to help in an emergency.
Kevin Garvey from the manufacturers attempts to levitate the unit....
Having attended all but one of these sessions (one was selfishly scheduled on my birthday!) I cannot overstate the impact they have had on those attending. Everyone I spoke to now feels prepared to grab the machine off the wall, and try to help.  I emphasise again the simplicity of these marvels of modern science - survival rates go from 2 to 5% without help, to 75% with early CPR and the use of a defibrillator.  As Peter Connolly stated, these machines make a massive difference in saving lives.
...and catches it on the way up!
Due to the fact that these machines will be listed on a public register, the emergency services will be able to direct people to the Halls when they are open, to use the machines. Once again brethren, the Mark Degree is acting as an Ambassador for the whole of Freemasonry!
Janet Graham assesses the patient's heart condition, totally missing his quadruple amputations!
Our trainer for this session was Janet Graham from the NHS, who again gave us her own slant on this vital subject, and showed us some videos, one of which was terribly sad, where a Spanish footballer was left to fade away in front of the crowd, as no defibrillator was used.  The contrast of a young man being saved in Australia, by early CPR and the use of a defibrillator, could not have been more marked.
These were light-hearted sessions, with a serious message!
The fact is that these people are effectively dead unless we do something, and these sessions have helped us all to feel far more confident in providing that help, by the use of a fully automated machine which talks you through exactly what to do, as soon as you open the case.......stunning !
